PIERRE CARDIN, 1976

Mind you, this was the designer who reputably gave inspiration to Beatles tailor Dougie Millings, marking him as the genesis of the mass dissemination of modernism in menswear. Of all of Cardin’s geo-centric constructions perhaps his most convincing were those for men — his favored architectural shapes working with rather than against the male anatomy. Considering this campaign was executed at an excruciatingly ostentatious moment in menswear, Cardin’s structured couture flare is downright conservative if not completely appropriate.
